Quantum Physics & The Nature of Reality: Neils Bohr ~ Charles Rutherford ~ Werner Heisenberg

Ernest Rutherford discovered the nucleus of the atom and was a mentor to Niels Bohr who further refined the model by showing that the nucleus was made up of neutrons and protons. The existence of electrons had already been inferred earlier.

Ernest Rutherford opened the door to the field of nuclear physics whereas Niels Bohr's contributions pointed the way to quantum physics.

At the time, it was noted that the nucleus within the atom takes up about as much space as a fly in a cathedral. Since then, it has been shown that the subatomic particles are themselves made up mostly of vast empty spaces containing tiny specs of something that may be described as either energy or matter or neither and both.

Werenr Heisenberg, along with Max Born and Pascual Jordan, set forth the matrix formulation of quantum mechanics in 1925. In1927 he published his uncertainty principle, upon which he built his philosophy and for which he is best known.

Erwin Schrödinger, (born Aug. 12, 1887, Vienna, Austria—died Jan. 4, 1961, Vienna), Austrian theoretical physicist who contributed to the wave theory of matter and to other fundamentals of quantum mechanics. He shared the 1933 Nobel Prize for Physics with the British physicist P.A.M. Dirac.
