The Burmese python invasion has been particularly extensive, notably across South Florida, where a large number of pythons can now be found in the Florida Everglades due to its established permanent breeding population. Hurricane Andrew in 1992 was deemed responsible for the destruction of a python breeding facilities in South Florida and these escaped snakes spread, populated and reproduced successfully in the Everglades and its surrounding areas.
Bushfire is an important element in the natural maintenance of the Everglades. The majority of fires are caused by lightning strikes from thunderstorms during the wet season. Their effects are largely superficial, and serve to foster specific plant growth: sawgrass will burn above water, but the roots are preserved underneath. Regardless, many animals fall victims to the flames each year. There is little know about the behavior of incubating pythons during an approaching bushfire and I hope that some of my recordings will shine a light on such rare behavior. Python and bushfire was filmed by Heiko Kiera in 2016.
