Blood pythons lay an average clutch of 18 to 30 eggs. The female remains coiled around the eggs during the incubation period. When the hatchlings emerge after 2.5 to 3 months, they are about 30 cm (12 inches) in length. Newborn pythons can be aggressive and will not hesitate to strike. They are independent and will start hunting for small frogs, insects and newborn rodents after their first shedding.
Filming pythons hatching can be extremely time consuming. The python hatchlings in this video poked their heads through the egg repeatedly, tasting the air and disappear back into the safety of the leathery egg for another two days before leaving the protective egg shell. It took me many days filming this hatching sequence of the entire clutch of python eggs. Pythons hatching was filmed by Heiko Kiera aka Ojatro in 2011.
