In Kampong Ijok, Batang Berjuntai Manaweblife discovered a Chinese craftsman and his wife hands-on busy creating Ponggal pottery for the Indian harvest festival dedicated to the Sun. This traditional festival originated in the southern part of India and now is a celebration that is seen all over the world. The key highlight of the festival is the boiling of rice with milk, savouries and other ingredients in a colourful 'kolam' decorated Ponggal pot until it boils over. The belief is that the greater the boil spills over the pot the better the future harvests and a sign of abundance and prosperity for the family. This Chinese craftsman named Ah Fatt has been crating ponggal pots for over 15 years and is probably the only Chinese doing it now. It takes lots of patience and care to hand make every piece. Thus, each is an art piece in itself from start to finish. Interestingly, every year new pots are needed as the old pots are not used again for the festival. Besides making Ponggal pots Ah Fatt is also a craftsman at making those colourful animal character children's savings 'piggy banks'. This uncommon sight is indeed a sunset industry in the days of online banking and electronic wallets! So watch this video and enjoy them as lasting images for future generations to remember.
