The southern Philippines are facing another year under martial law after President Rodrigo Duterte extended the measure. In 2017, the southern city of Marawi was the scene of a battle between government troops and hundreds of self-proclaimed "Islamic State" jihadists. The conflict killed more than a thousand people and displaced hundreds of thousands of residents. It took five months of heavy urban combat for the army to regain control. Today Marawi still lies in ruins, and many fear IS could return.
