Last night, October 18, 2013, the KL Petronas Twin Towers glowed pretty in pink like you've never seen it glow before. From where I stood, I could only gasp at the marvel as the towers rose to their heights flooded in a sea of pink. And, as if that wasn't enough to leave you in awe of what landmark illumination can do, there's the amazing digital light and sound show that turned the facade of Suria KLCC into a multi-sensorial projection extravaganza, played out in concert with the KLCC Lake Symphony Fountain. The traditional emblem associated with the colour pink, i.e., the pink ribbon, was the prominent feature of the show.
What I witnessed was the Malaysian chapter of Estee Lauder's international breast cancer awareness campaign. Into its 21st anniversary, the campaign has been lighting up the world's greatest landmarks, flooding them pink to the hilt. These include the Sydney Opera House, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the great towers of Tokyo, Taipei (101), London and the Empire State Building. In Kuala Lumpur, the pinking of the Twin Towers follows a string of similar effects since 2007 when Estee Lauder Malaysia first launched the local campaign. Famous pinked landmarks include the Sultan Abdul Samad Building, Bintang Walk, Pavilion KL, Farenheit 88 and the National Science Centre.
Thumbs up for Estee Lauder for bringing breast cancer awareness into the Malaysian public limelight in more dramatic ways than one. And thanks too to Petronas and KLCC for their strong support. It is through such efforts that the message of early detection and prevention receives the attention it deserves. The bottom line is about saving lives. And that's what matters most.
