Wonder why there is a place in Georgetown ,Penang named Dhoby Ghaut? As implied in its name, "dhoby" means washermen in Hindi, while "ghaut" means an open space.Hence, Dhoby Ghaut is where age-old traditional Indian laundry services are found ! These tradesmen have been occupying these century old heritage shops here since the early 19th century. In the 70s there were over 150 dhoby shops here. By 2006 there are only just more than 10. And today , there are only 5 left! There have been hard time besides competition from modern laundry shops . Their source of water from the river has not been as clean as before. Then in 2012 an unfortunate fire destroyed 3 dhoby shops.Nevertheless, business today still seems busy with contract washing from long time clients. Dhoby washing is unique. Laundry with heavy stains are boiled in hot water, stirred, and then splashed onto concrete pavements to "unlock" tough stains! This traditional method of washing is good for white materials, saries and silk ,and to reach the dirty parts that modern machines cannot reach! These 3rd generation Dhoby shops and their tradesmen are another illustrious heritage not to be missed...before they finally disappear!
