At Xin Art Space, Level 1, Lot 2-1, Pusat Perniagaan Jelatek, Jln Jelatek 1, Kuala Lumpur.
March 20 – April 5, 2015
KL’s latest art gallery, Xin Art Space showcased more than 40 pieces of black and red ink drawings and paintings on paper in various dimensions that are specially selected from a private collection. It was Samad’s son, Helmy who first noticed his father’s habit of doodling and scribbling on scraps of paper. Recognizing their potential value, he provided his father with sketch pads so his thoughts could be documented properly.
Exhibition curator, Tan Sei Hon said that the artworks on display, of various dimensions and limited to those produced in black and red inks, symbolize his revolutionary and unique take on the cause he supports. His works come from a very emotional place, so we created a link between them and his preoccupations at that time. Nothing that was produced here by Pak Samad was meant for a patron, the market or an audience in mind. It was made in private, outside or rather in spite of, his professional obligations. It was made with pleasure, love and angst even, and presented in its unadulterated form.
Pak Samad has said that this is his most intimate and personal exhibition to date and this is one of the reasons why.
