During the annual dry season of the Everglades, river otters are forced to hunt for food in the remaining waterholes, which are also frequented by many many predators. The female still guarding her last surviving kit from a litter of five born 10 month earlier. Fish is the otter’s favored food, but they also consume crayfish, frogs, turtles, and even small mammals and birds will be eaten on occasions.
The kit is to inexperienced to hunt fully on its own and still depends on its mother for additional food provisions. But the mother is on guard and keeps her eye on the alligator near by. Alligators are opportunistic feeders and a young river otter would make a suitable meal.
The mother’s warning call alerts her youngster to escape the approaching alligator just in time and without taking further risks, the otters leave the waterhole for good.
