Having a song land at the top of Billboard's Hot 100 is no mean feat. In fact, some of the most iconic musicians of all time have never quite managed to reach that top spot. These are the bands that sold millions of records, but never had a 1 hit.
From the moment they made their presence known with the release of 1983's Kill 'Em All, Metallica have generally been regarded as the world's premier heavy metal band. Over the next two decades, the California foursome won millions of devoted fans with their dark, noisy, and complex sound. Metallica made black T-shirt-wearing headbangers out of people all over the world with pitch-black anthems about death, darkness, and despair. About 63 million Metallica albums changed hands in the United States alone, and none more so than their self-titled 1991 record, nicknamed "The Black Album," which has been certified 16-times platinum.
Metallica have topped Billboard's Mainstream Rock Airplay chart 10 times, including with the much-derided track "Until it Sleeps." A significant departure for Metallica's sound, "Until it Sleeps" felt softer and more like alternative rock than hard rock or heavy metal. Despite being very much despised among Metallica fans, however, the song was clearly their most accessible, bringing them their highest entry into the Billboard Hot 100 — at 10.
