Monitor lizards such as black throat monitors, nile monitors, tegus and other came to Florida through the pet trade. While some of these large lizards have been released by their previous owners, others escaped in large numbers from exotic importers during natural disasters such as Hurricane Andrew. Tegus and Nile Monitors have established breeding populations in South Florida, while black throated have only been caught occasionally. These large lizards are powerful predators, feeding on small mammals, birds and other reptiles. They have a voracious appetite for all kinds of eggs, including alligator and even crocodile eggs. These large lizards pose a real threat to many indigenous species in Florida. Monitor Plunders Alligator Nest Heiko Kiera aka Ojatro in 2017.
