Remember that Matthew Broderick movie "WarGames"? It's a 1983 thriller about a teen hacker who very nearly starts World War III by mistake. It's not nearly as far-fetched as it sounds; in fact, the film's depiction of modems and hacking led President Ronald Reagan to discuss the plot with his advisers, and even enact a Presidential directive regarding computer security — the first of its kind. In real life, there have been a few incidents quite similar to the scenario dreamed up by the makers of "WarGames," where a massive global conflict was almost sparked. Here are some points in history that almost caused World War III to happen.
