As German-Turkish relations normalize after the release of German journalist Deniz Yücel, the Erdogan administration continues to openly criticize the European Union. The president said in October 2017: “To tell the truth, we don't need EU membership anymore." Asked whether Turkey is planning on accepting the EU's rules anytime soon, Erdogan's Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu says on DW's Conflict Zone:"Turkey needs the European Union and European Union needs Turkey."
