For 70 years, the USSR developed a worldwide reputation as an enormous, nefarious world power. During that time, the Soviet Union fostered an unwavering push towards innovations which would, presumably, allow them to take over the world. Some of these, like the first satellite and human in space, were revolutionary, but other more unusual experiments were not only failures, but horribly cruel and tragic.

These included experimentations on animals and humans, causing mass starvation, and massive, widespread psychological conditioning. What exactly were these unusual experiments? Here are some messed-up experiments that the Soviet Union conducted.
