McBride is a spring upwelling that feeds a swampy flow that joins with the Wakulla River in Wakulla Springs State Park to the south. The headspring pool is approximately 45 feet in diameter. The bottom of the pool is covered in eelgrass except for the vent. The water near the vent turns clear. A small tube like entrance, just enough for a single diver to squeeze through.
Since I never dove McBride cave before, I didn’t use my amphibico underwater housing for recording. Instead, dive buddy Travis Kersting placed a GoPro on his head to document our first cave dive together. The McBride underwater cave was one of the more difficult cave dives I had ever participated in at that time. The cave’s entrance was so small, that I got stuck with my rebreather and only with the help from my dive buddy, who pulled me into the cave. This was not the smartest cave dive I had ever made, simply because I forgot to consider what happens after loosing my dive partner in an accident. Would I still be able get out of the cave without any help…
Inside the McBride cave, one had to be extra careful not to steer up any silt and to my surprise, its line was old and flimsy. So I stayed close to the line but tried to avoid any contact if fear of braking it (there was hardly any flow that day, so if the line broke and during a silt out causing orientation lose, I surely would not have know which way the exit was located. Also, the cave is very delicate to say the least. Its line stone walls were so bridle, it crumble easily when touched accidentally. In fact I observed that entire walls were swaying, which didn’t make me feel at easy. Still, its an interesting cave to dive but in all honesty, the cave bug has not bitten me yet and therefore I didn’t mind turning around towards the exit after an hour dive. Cave Diving at McBride was filmed by Heiko Kiera aka Ojatro in May 2016.
