Nelson Guda has traveled around the world trying to understand how people move from places of extreme darkness back into the light and express it in his art. The U.S. artist has worked in paint, ink, glass, steel, emulsion and electrons. His latest project, "ENEMIES," began in East Africa in 2011, where he brought people together from opposite sides of brutal conflicts in the slums of Kenya, the border of Sudan and South Sudan and the killing fields of Rwanda. In the ENEMIES Project, Nelson sees the act of seeking out conflict and resilience as a form of art in its highest sense of expression of the human experience.

Nelson holds a PhD in biology and helped found an interdisciplinary research institute at the University of Texas in Austin.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
