In just over one month, four western men have been targeted by Chinese security services.
The latest arrest is Australian author Yang Hengjun, arrested while visiting China just days before a court sentenced Canadian Robert Lloyd Schellenberg to death for a drug smuggling conviction.
And late last year, two other Canadians, former diplomat Michael Kovrig and businessman Michael Spavor were arrested in China on espionage charges.
The timing of these detentions is raising eyebrows. They come after Canada's arrest of top Huawei official Meng Wanzhou - wanted by the US for violating Iran sanctions.
China denies its crackdown on foreigners is retaliation for Meng's arrest. But Beijing's actions have prompted fierce international condemnation.
