Iran dispute: Does the US have a clear plan? | DW News

In 2015, Iran signed an agreement with the US, China, Russia, France, Germany and the UK. Under the deal, Iran agreed to cut down on enriching uranium in exchange for relief from international sanctions. In August 2018 the US withdrew from the deal. Now the pact is on the brink of collapse. Iran on Sunday said it would restart talks, if the US lifts sanctions and returns to the terms of the 2015 deal. Meanwhile, Iran has resumed enriching uranium beyond 3.5 percent. A British newspaper published leaked memos from the former UK Ambassador to Washington. He claimed President Donald Trump pulled out of the nuclear deal with no plan of what to do next. What sort of strategy does Washington intend to pursue? Behnam Ben Taleblu, research fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracy, a US foreign policy and national security think tank which opposed the 2015 deal and has advised the Trump administration, joins DW in the studio to give his take on the Trump administration's approach.
