Retirement funds in America are sourced by three sources of income:
1. Social Security. The average American is getting around $1,500/month; it is hard to rely on this if you want to travel and don't think about saving money all the time. The amount of money you get from Social Security depends on how much you've earned before.
2. 401(k) Plan. It is a company-sponsored retirement account that employees can contribute to. Employers may also make matching contributions.
3. Investments. All Americans start investing when they are 20-30 years old.
