In today’s English lesson you will learn the differences between By and With to help talk about How things are done. These two English prepositions are commonly confused, but your confusion will be cleared up BY watching today’s English grammar lesson.

When you want to talk about how something is done in English, it is possible to use by or with. This English lesson has four main points to keep in mind when thinking about the differences between with and by.

1. How to use By with verbs: You can use by plus a gerund (verb + ing) to talk about how something is done. EX: I relax by listening to music. They study English by watching YouTube videos.

2. How to use By with nouns: You can use by plus with a noun which describes the method or process that something is done. Usually these nouns are connected to the method or process of transportation, communication, manufacturing, or payment. EX: She goes to school by car. He contacted me by email. The cookies were made by hand. I’ll pay by credit card.

3. How to use With with nouns: You can use with plus a noun which describes the tool, instrument, item, object that is used to do a certain task. EX: We ate dinner with chopsticks. He wrote the letter with a pen. They study English with a textbook.

4. How to use with and by in the passive voice: In the passive voice you use by plus the person who did the action, and with plus the objected used to do the action. EX: This album was made by my friend. This album was made with pictures from our trip.

英語で何かがどの様に行われるかについて話したい時は、byまたはwithで使えます。この英語の授業には、withとbyの違いを考える時に覚えておくべき4つの主なポイントがあります。

1. Byを動詞と共に使う方法：byと動名詞（動詞+ ing）を使って、何かがどの様に行われるかを話すことができます。 例: I relax by listening to music. They study English by watching YouTube videos.
