By the time the first episodes of "Storage Wars" were ordered, the Dotsons had been at it for a long time. Both Dan's mother and grandfather were auctioneers, and in 1983, he opened his own business — American Auctioneers — doing exactly what he does on the show: Selling storage units. They knew what was going to work, and what wasn't — and who was just the sort of character the show needed.
