Juan Ponce de Leon was a Spanish explorer who discovered — at least for Europeans — the Florida peninsula in 1513. In the process, he enslaved native free peoples and introduced plagues that wiped out thousands, but Ponce de Leon's goal was not to be a fair and just governor.
