On April 10, 1912, the RMS Titanic left port in Southampton and set sail on its maiden voyage to New York City. The ship was the largest of its time and was considered to be the height of luxury, featuring state of the art equipment and incredible accommodations that included a saltwater swimming pool and a Versailles-style lounge.
In spite of its many amenities, the Titanic very famously was outfitted with fewer lifeboats than would be required for its 2200 passengers.
