WHEN renowned zoologist Dian Fossey was murdered in 1985 there were less than 250 mountain gorillas left in the wild. The American, who dedicated her life to saving the species, was found face-up on the floor of her jungle cabin, having been bludgeoned with a machete. As well as inspiring the Oscar-nominated movie Gorillas in the Mist, her tragic story also created the Gorilla Doctors, who nearly 30 years later have brought the species back from the brink of extinction. The multi-national team operates in the heart of the jungle, treating maimed and critically ill gorillas as well as caring for orphans at two dedicated sanctuaries. They intervene when the gentle giants are trapped in poaching snares, exposed to potentially fatal human viruses and even when they have been caught in crossfire between warring factions in DR Congo.
