This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. What if repeated back surgery -- and severing tendons in your wrist by putting your hand through a window -- would not get in the way of your Olympic gold medal in rowing?

Tim Foster's journey from a bronze medal at the Olympic Summer Games in Atlanta '96 to gold in Sydney 2000 was so full of ups and downs that the BBC TV followed Tim and his teammates around and aired "Gold Fever," a three-part video just prior to the Sydney Games. (No pressure there, right?) A year later, Tim was awarded an MBE, a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
