France's president Emmanual Macron has taken other European leaders by surprise by criticizing NATO. In an interview with the Economist magazine, Macron said the alliance was experiencing 'brain death'. He said it was being undermined by a lack of coordination and by the unpredictability of US President Donald Trump. But Chancellor Angela Merkel and the head of NATO Jens Stoltenberg have rejected Macron's remarks.
