Hey Guys Bill here… Piranha are well know throughout the world as dangerous predators that swarm on their prey. But a video just sent to me by billschannel viewer Cannibis Frontier, claims to show a Piranha Feeding Frenzy on steroids.
It was recorded in Brazil and posted to a youtube site with the title Feeding piranhas in a river in Brazil…. but is this video really showing a Piranha attack? Or, are we looking art something else? That’s what Cannibis wants to know.
I started by taking a closer look at the video… It certainly looks like Piranha feeding, but when I zoom in, I can see there is someting wrong.
These don’t look like like any Piranha I know of…. These fish are something else… Exactly what I don’t know.
I sent a quick Facebook message to my friend Steve Townson at Amazon Angler. Steve has spent a lifetime fishing in the Amazon and knows his fish. If anybody knows what they are, he does.
Steve reviewed the video and recognized the fish immediately. He told me what we are looking at is something you might not suspect.
STEVE: If you look these close up they are long and slender… these are catfish!
Bill: Catfish???
STEVE: These are Piracacinga….
Bill: Pirancacinga catfish are sometimes referred to as Vulture Catfish. They can grow 40 centimetres (16 in) and originate from the Amazon and Orinoco River basins.
STEVE: They are scavangers and will eat anything thrown in.
Bill: Unfortunately, the Piracacinga also loves to eat Pink River Dolphin - which is an endangered species. And fisherman are known to be killing pink dolphin so they can use them as bait to catch the Piracachinga.

Now sadly, what we could really be watching here is Pink Dolphin meat being fed to Piracachinga catfish.
Now, I can’t prove that, but one thing I do know for sure… the video claiming to be a recording of a Piranha Feeding Frenzy is, fake.
Okay, now if you are still skeptical that these are catfish, Steve has a special message for you.
