Former US Vice President Joe Biden has officially announced his run for the White House in 2020, ending months of speculation. Many consider him to be the Democrats best hope to unseat President Donald Trump. But Biden enters a large field of 19 other Democratic candidates. His candidacy has been welcomed by many, but has also sparked debate about the direction of the modern-day Democratic Party. Many of the other candidates lean far to the left, following on the heals of Bernie Sanders. And there is concern that at 76 he may be too old. Having served forty years in the US Senate, he has a lot of baggage to contend with, including his stance on the Anita Hill scandal during the confirmation hearings for the appointment of Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court. But Biden remains very popular among a broad cross-section of American voters, including those who voted for Donald Trump in 2016.
