India has published the final version of its controversial National Register of Citizens in the north-eastern state of Assam. The list effectively renders nearly two million, mostly Muslim, people stateless. Residents gathered on Saturday to see if their names were on the citizenship list. To be included, people had to somehow prove that they had come to Assam before March 24th, 1971, the day before neighboring Bangladesh went to war with Pakistan. Many of those affected have lived in Assam their whole lives.
