SUMMARY:
- Most people believe his real name is Robin Gunningham, a man born on July 28, 1973 in Yate, not far from Bristol, UK.
- There are also rumors that Banksy is actually the frontman of the English band Massive Attack, and his real name is Robert Del Naja, also known as 3D.
- Probably the most famous early work of Banksy’s was The Mild Mild West, which he created in 1999. But it was actually vandalized by an anti-graffiti organization called Appropriate Media when they threw red paint on it in 2009.
- A good example of how a mural can actually be sold is the story with his famous work Kissing Coppers. It was created on a wall of Brighton’s Prince Albert Pub in 2004 and sold to an anonymous US buyer through an auction in 2011.
- One of Banksy’s biggest messages that he sends through his art is a criticism of commercialism.
- Even though Banksy believes selling his work through commercial art galleries would be a failure for a graffiti artist, he does get some cash thanks to his talent and fame.
- Banksy used to make money through a Bristol-based dealer called Pictures on Walls that existed from 2003 to 2017.
- Banksy is also the author of a super successful book “Wall and Piece” that came out in 2005 and remained a bestseller among art books for several years.
- He was also the director of Exit Through the Gift Shop, a documentary that got an Academy Award nomination in 2011 and gathered over $5 million at the box office.
