In this clip from the Learn Liberty debate, Prof. Bryan Caplan discusses the possibility of dismantling the U.S. military. While he does not say the United States absolutely should not have a military force, he does point out some potential upsides to dramatic reduction of military might. He draws on the example of the Soviet Union to show how the collapse of military force can actually contribute to peace. He suggests that a dramatic cut in defense spending could lead to an outcome similar to what the Swiss experience: since no one is scared of them, nobody bothers them.
