A 30 second video highlighting three of our five Oregon Zoo core values:Animal welfareOregon Zoo animal staff are passionate advocates for wildlife, each day, bringing passion to work to ensure that every animal lives the best life possible. The zoo's 20-year master plan, adopted in 2011, is transforming old exhibits from earlier eras. Exhibits are being significantly expanded and enhanced with naturalistic surfacing materials, wide-open vistas and varied programs of enrichment activities. The goal: to give animals choices while simulating both the challenges and rewards of life in the wild.ConservationThrough research, field studies and participation in a number of Species Survival Plans with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the zoo works to ensure the long-term survival of endangered species and their habitats. Species include Amur leopards in Asia and black rhinoceros in Africa. Closer to home, California condors which once soared above Oregon, are making a comeback after near-extinction, thanks in part to the zoo's Jonsson Center for Wildlife Conservation in Clackamas County.EducationThe zoo is one of the premier providers of conservation education in the Pacific Northwest. Programs and classes at the zoo and offsite reach audiences near one million annually -- from preschoolers to elders -- and empower them to be active, engaged stewards of the earth's wildlife and ecosystems.SustainabilityReducing water and energy usage is a top priority for all aspects of zoo operations. Rainwater is harvested to clean animal areas; sunlight is captured via light tubes; sensors turn off power when rooms empty; animal waste is recycled into compost. The zoo employs these and many more common-sense and cutting-edge technologies as it aims to be the best possible steward of the Northwest ecosystem it calls its home.CommunityZoo camps, ZooLights, summer concerts: these Oregon Zoo institutions are part of the lives and traditions of thousands of Pacific Northwesterners. For nearly 125 years, the zoo has been a trusted resource and community asset. With the continued help of its corporate partners, this tradition of excellence will continue.
