The film is based on a story set in the Chola Empire in the year 1083 AD. The central character in the story is Ambikapathi (Sivaji Ganesan) a poet and the son of the famous Tamil poet Kambar who is in love with the Chola princess and daughter of King Kulothunga Chola, Amaravati (P. Bhanumathi). The king objects to their love and gives Ambikapathi the death sentence, but when challenged by Ambikapathi King Chola gives him a test. If he passes the test he lives, if not, he will be sent to the gallows. However, Ambikapathi fails the test thereby destroying all chances of saving his life and love.
