According to the UN, nearly 4,000 civilians were killed in Afghanistan last year, the deadliest year yet for civilians. Among those 4,000 killed were more than 900 children. The violence has left behind landmines and unexploded mortars that are often found by children. In one family, a device killed three children and left the surviving seven with missing limbs.
