This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. The patient whose illness launched her
research career. A patient perspective on research.

For many years Tilly suffered from undiagnosed biliary cirrhosis. She was chronically tired, and largely fobbed off by medics because her blood tests were normal. Though she was diagnosed in 1986 there was no cure for this exhausting, debilitating condition and, crucially, there was no support either. In 1994 she became a founder member of LIVErNORTH, a liver patients support group based at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne. She continues to champion the patient perspective and in 2012 the British Medical Journal accepted "A Patient's Journey, Fatigue in primary biliary cirrhosis" for publication -- a journal article written in collaboration with researchers at Newcastle University.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
