How to motivate yourself to workout? Is your workout game more like a rollercoaster? You finally get the motivation to exercise for a month or so... but then you fall off the wagon. If that’s the case, perhaps you’re working out for all the wrong reasons.
Author Judith Natelli McLaughlin is sure that the right kind of motivation is the key to the best results. As for the wrong type of “motivational” phrases you might say to yourself, they’ll always keep you from achieving your goal. Take, for example, “No pain, no gain!” In fact, pain is never a good motivator – actually, we’re programmed to fear and avoid it! Do you often find it easy to do things you’re afraid of?

SUMMARY:
- If you constantly set your mind to some negative aspect of your workout, such as pain, you won’t get to enjoy what you’re doing and the changes you see in your body.
- Perseverance is good and all, but it’s not necessarily a great motivator. Again, the word itself gives you a negative feeling about what’s ahead, making you feel pretty much hopeless: it’s either all or nothing and be stuck with a body that you’re not happy with.
- Doing too much at once is no good in any aspect of life, whether it be fitness, work, or personal matters. Think about it: if you work overtime to get more done, sure, you do achieve that, but at what cost?
- What really makes sense is not being ashamed of who you are and not trying to achieve the un-achievable. All those pictures in magazines and Instagram of beautiful fit people leading perfect lives – that’s an image put out there to get more likes and re-posts.
- Getting in shape can change the way you see yourself, especially if you have confidence issues. But it can’t work miracles. Whether it’s financial or relationship issues, simply going to the gym won’t make those magically disappear.
- Working out is meant to strain your body, so you’ll naturally feel some tiredness afterwards. But that doesn’t mean you should exhaust yourself to the point where you just don’t want to do anything.
- Once you start working out on your own free will and not because something dictates that you must, you’ll be a lot happier to do it, and your new body will reflect that!
