There are so many mistakes you can make when preparing for the TOEFL listening section. And this might be the hardest section of the whole test because once the listening passage is over, it never returns. It's crucial that you avoid these five common mistakes almost every TOEFL student makes when preparing for the test.

The first TOEFL listening section mistake is that you try to understand everything you hear. You should focus more of your energy on understanding how to take good notes and predicting the questions. Your second TOEFL Listening section mistake is that you look around the room. Keep your eye focused on your computer screen and your notes. That's it!

Your third TOEFL listening section mistake is that you don't know how to take notes. When you take notes, only write down nouns and verbs and always misspell your words. A good rule is to write words without the vowels (a, e, i, o, u).

The fourth TOEFL listening section mistake is that you try to write down the main idea. Don't worry about that. Just listen to the whole passage and ask yourself, "What is this passage mostly about?" You will understand the main idea by the end of the passage without writing it down.

The fifth common TOEFL listening section mistake is that you think like a student. Don't try to understand everything and find the right answer, instead, ask yourself questions like, "Why is the teacher talking about this?" "What does he or she want me to learn by the end of this lesson?" When you start asking the right kinds of questions, your listening abilities will dramatically improve.
