We are in early production for this documentary that will illuminate and celebrate the life and work of W.C. Handy, known as "The Father of the Blues." Emmy Award winner Joanne Fish is producing and directing "Mr. Handy's Blues," which will bring the composer's story to the screen for the first time. In the early 1900's Handy made significant contributions to the evolution of the Blues and early Jazz. A composer, bandleader and arranger, he gave written form and voice to a musical culture that was once purely oral and ephemeral - African-American folk music - and in the process became one of the most influential and beloved musicians of his era. He was the first African-American to publish his own compositions, and had one of the first black-owned businesses on Broadway in New York City. "St. Louis Blues" was the most recorded song of the first half of the 20th century, and we intend to commemorate its 100th anniversary with the release of the film in 2014. We hope the documentary will renew awareness of Handy's important role in the development of a uniquely American genre of music.
