SUMMARY:
- A decade ago, people believed that by 2018, human cloning would be nothing out of the ordinary. But you still can't send your carbon copy to replace you at work when you don't feel like going!
- Several decades ago, many people believed that by 2018, farmers wouldn't have to spend so much time in the fields to get a good harvest.
- There were times when people believed that by 2019, they wouldn’t need their writing or typing skills. These mundane and time-wasting tasks would already have been replaced with "automated dictation."
- Ten years ago, NASA officials were sure that by 2019, they’d have sent a piloted mission to the Red Planet. Unfortunately, it's still unlikely that people will see the Red Planet with their own eyes earlier than in 2028.
- There was a prediction that in 2018, Mount Vesuvius, the supervolcano that destroyed the city of Pompeii in 79 BCE, would erupt again. The volcano hasn't shown any signs of life yet, meaning that the prediction was inaccurate.
- The year 2018 was supposed to be the year of success for Venus. That's when people should’ve discovered a new form of energy on this planet that would apparently completely change the way we use good ol’ fashioned things like cars.
- Nostradamus, who lived in the 16th century, was convinced that by 2019, human life would be 200 years long.
- One of the predictions was that by 2019, nuclear breeder reactors would completely replace natural gas. But as you see, we’re still extracting, trading, and using natural gas, and it doesn’t look like people are gonna give it up any time soon…
- In 2013, Thorsten Heins, the former CEO of Blackberry, claimed that tablets weren't a profitable business model. He was sure that 5 or 6 years later, nobody would want to buy one.
- For centuries people believed that by 2000-2020, flying cars would be a commonplace thing and the main form of transportation. But people will most likely have to wait another century or so before everyone will be able to enjoy the comfort of zooming around in their own Jetsons-style ride.
- At some point during the last decade, there was an idea that soon all restaurants would have to tell you how their dishes affect your body.
- Do you remember in 2009 when everybody was in a panic about the world ending on December 21, 2012? It turned out that December 21, 2012, was the last day of the first "Great Cycle" of the calendar, which was 5,125 years after the Mayans started to track time.
- In 2017, the Internet was brimming with tons of viral videos. According to them, for some unknown reason, a stray planet called Nibiru was going to leave its course and crash right into Earth, tearing our planet apart.
