Why Isn’t Flying More Fun (Or At Least Less Terrifying)?

If we could just spread our wings and hop into the clouds, flying would probably be a heck of a lot of fun. Instead, we have to wait for our boarding group to climb into a cramped metal tube and hope for no turbulence. But does flying on airplanes have to be this way?
