Pope Francis has arrived in the Bulgarian capital Sofia on a two-day visit to the European Union's poorest country, after which he will travel to North Macedonia. The Pope was greeted by Bulgaria's Prime Minister Boyko Borissov and has met with President Rumen Radev. During his stay, he is expected to discuss the complicated relationship between the Catholic Church and the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, which is the dominant religion in the Balkan country, but his request to hold a joint mass was turned down. In his opening address, he took up an issue that is close to his heart: the plight of refugees. He urged Bulgaria, which has taken a hardline stance against mass migration, to open its heart to, "those who knock at your door."
