In what is the largest internment of minorities since World War II, more than one million ethnic Uighur Muslims are locked up in specially constructed prisons located in China’s north-western region of Xinjiang. In recent years, thousands of Uighurs have fled into exile. DW correspondent Julia Hahn met a woman now living in Istanbul in Turkey who says she was trapped in a Chinese detention center for more than a year.
