The Plaza Mayor is a large, open, baroque space in the center of the city.



A covered, arched walkway along the outside of the plaza provides shelter from the elements.



However, the usually lovely weather in Salamanca makes the open plaza the place to be.



From its completion in 1755 until the mid-1800s, Plaza Mayor was the scene of bullfights.



The four-story sandstone buildings surrounding the plaza usually see more relaxed gatherings these days.



The immense popularity of this plaza means that people are here until late at night.
