While many think of coastlines and deserts when they think of Australia, there are other secret pockets of paradise that are home to some of the most intriguing and iconic of its animals: the waterholes. The freshwater wetlands and waterholes in the tropical far north of the country are among the most diverse ecosystems, hosting an extraordinary array of birds, insects, fish, and freshwater crocodiles.

Up in the Far North, there are just two main seasons, the wet and the dry. In October at the end of the dry season, there’s little water, and birds crowd around the remaining shallow pools of water. Food supplies are scarcer. But in November everything changes. The wet season brings intense rainfall and creates vast expanses of shallow wetlands. All life at the waterhole is part of an intricate food web. Pelicans appear, to exploit the profusion of fish.

All these creatures take advantage of the abundance the wet season brings, playing their part in the vivid, interconnected life of the wetland and waterhole ecosystems. Only when the dry season returns and the waters recede will the birds fly away or settle down to wait out the leaner months.
