She’s been on album covers, and featured in great works of art, Coconut the albino American alligator is well known and well beloved by many, especially by me and the other crew here at the Reptile Zoo. Coconut lost an eye when she was really young, however in spite of that she’s very quick on her feet and is absolutely stunning to look at. There’s a reason why she’s been on so many covers! From magazines to album covers of famous artists. She loves what I like to call ‘Alligator Car Washes’, where we clean her off and give her a nice little bath so she stays nice and clean. She’s an amazing American alligator, and is still really young and has yet to grow into her full size. Much like these other two gators, I’m about to show you. Now Pied American Alligators are different from albinos because they have blotches of grey and black, they look kind of like reptilian Dalmatians almost. Unlike albinos which have red eyes, Pied American alligators have more blacks and blues for their eye color, the blue eyed ones are especially beautiful. Also Albino American Alligators cannot be in direct sunlight otherwise they’ll die if exposed for too long, hence why most albinos live in zoos or aquariums. There are only ever around 20-30 albino gators in the world at any one time. Pieds are even rarer than albinos, only 15 are known to exist currently. Pieds have a little bit more tolerance for sunlight due to the fact they have some pigmentation still. Both the Pieds and Albinos are very precious and rare and therefore must be saved and preserved for conservation. Now onto the Pieds, The girl is named Oreo, and the boy, well, we don’t have a name for him yet, so we’ll need your guys’ help on that one. But we know one thing for sure though he’s a feisty little fella who loves chicken and doesn’t give up or let go, once he’s got an arm and leg, believe me! This guy has bitten me a few times and he’s not one to let go. So I got to be careful with him, especially when feeding him! What do you think the other Pied Gator’s name should be? Let us know in the comments!
