Learn how to describe a line graph in today’s English lesson! For the Academic IELTS exam Writing Task 1, being asked to describe a line graph is very common. In this lesson you will learn essential English vocabulary for describing line graphs, as well as 5 steps that will help you to write IELTS band 9 descriptions of line graphs. In addition, I will share with you a useful formula for paraphrasing what a line graph is about!
Some useful vocabulary for line graph trends / movement:
1. Remain stable, Remain steady, Remain constant, Remain consistent.
2. Fluctuate
3. Go down, Decrease, Fall, Drop, Decline, Dip
4. Go up, Increase, Rise, Grow, Climb
5. A little, Slightly, Slowly, Gradually, Steadily
6. A lot, Dramatically, Sharply, Significantly, Rapidly
*IELTS Writing Tip: Alternate between adverb - verb combinations and adjective - noun combinations when describing line graphs to make your writing more exciting and natural.
Steps for writing the description of a line graph:
1. Make sure you understand what the graph is about.
a. Read the title
b. Read the description
c. Look at the Y axis
d. Look at the X axis
2. Write an introduction about what the graph is about. Use my formula to help.
“This (type) graph” + Synonym for ‘shows’ + What is represented in the Y axis + Time expression explaining X axis.
3. Write an overview / summary of the overall trends in the graph. (Don’t use specific numbers in this part of the writing)
4. Write 2 -3 paragraphs with specific information and data from the chart. Use the vocabulary taught in this lesson.
5. Check your work. Check for spelling, grammar, vocabulary, format, and correct word count.
