During the many weeks of filming these alligator hatchlings, which were actually protected by a large female alligator, a large red-shouldered hawk was preying frequently on the hatchling, swooping down repeatedly but never really catching any of the hatchlings due to their alertness. Regardless, alligator hatchlings are extremely vulnerable to attacks from birds. Not just many large wadding birds like the grey heron feed on newly hatched alligators but birds of prey like large owls prey on young alligators too. But the Female alligator will protect its hatchlings for the first year, making it difficult for any bird to approach. Newborn alligators don’t need to feed right away, because they still have enough yolk from their egg to provide for the needed nutrition. Most hatchlings will start feeding within the next two weeks after birth and prey on insects, invertebrates, small fish, frogs, mice and anything else they can catch and swallow. Hawk attacks alligator hatchlings was filmed by Heiko Kiera in 2017.
