Despite the fact that many songs incorrectly use ain’t and contain double negatives, you should try to avoid these common mistakes.

When communicating in English it is important to make your meaning clear, so it is best to avoid double negatives and avoid using ain’t. In today’s English lesson you will learn how to fix double negatives in your sentences and what to use instead of ain’t.

What is a Double Negative:
A double negative in English is when there are two negative words in the same sentence. Usually the first word is “Not” or some contraction of not, like: isn’t, aren’t, didn’t, doesn’t, don’t, haven’t, and so on. The second negative word is usually connected to no, like: none, or no one, or nothing, or nowhere. In English you cannot put two negative words together in your sentence because it makes the meaning incredibly unclear and difficult to understand. It also sounds very unintelligent.

How to Fix Double Negatives in English:
1. Make the sentence positive by changing the first verb
Ex: He didn’t have no money X = He had no money.
She doesn’t know nothing X = She knows nothing.
2. Change the second negative into the word “any…”
Ex: He didn’t have no money X = He didn’t have any money.
She doesn’t know nothing X = She doesn’t know anything.

What does Ain’t Mean:
Ain’t is NOT a real word and could have five possible meanings
Am not, Aren’t, Isn’t, Haven’t, Hasn’t
