The defining moment of his youth was found in something he had read stating; "a machine that could duplicate photosynthesis could feed the world." In retrospect, it was interesting that without any evidence, he considered this to be self-evident. So began the journey from a homemade Bunsen burner in Guyana to The Scripps Energy and Materials Center in Florida to make that "machine."

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event.
