Glyphosate, best known under Monsanto's commercial name Roundup is a highly controversial substance. Is the weedkiller a major health risk or only deadly to plants? A court in California has come down on the side of 'major health risk', awarding a plaintiff who sued the company compensation totalling around $80 million. It's not the first time the seed and agrichemicals giant has lost a major claim involving the product. And an avalanche of other lawsuits looks set to follow. The combined market value of Bayer and Monsanto is now already lower than the value of each company before the takeover.
